Students: you are welcome to apply for any open position if you are interested in volunteering to obtain community service hours.

Planting Coach (100 Open Positions)

Planting Coach Role:

  • The role of Planting Coach is simply about helping people plant trees properly, and it is one of the most fun, rewarding, visible, and important roles within the 10,000 Trees organization


Planting Coach Responsibilities:

  • Be at the Planting Site on Sun, May 3rd, 2020 to greet your assigned group of Planters, lead them to the designated planting area/s you are responsible for, and demonstrate how to safely and properly plant trees (and/or shrubs and/or wildflowers

  • Monitor how your Planters are doing and coach them as necessary so that all trees, shrubs, and wildflowers planted have the best possible chances of surviving and thriving

  • Be safe, learn, have fun, and do whatever you can to make everyone’s (Planters, fellow Planting Coaches, Planting Coach Coordinators, and your) experience an enjoyable and memorable one


Planting Coach Abilities:

  • Be comfortable engaging, speaking to, and coaching groups of ~20 Planters*

  • Be able to properly plant trees, shrubs, and wildflowers and show your Planters how to do so too*

  • Be able to direct your Planters to all key facilities (1st Aid Station, Washrooms, Lunch Area, etc.)

  • Be appropriately attired (work gloves, sun-hat, rubber boots, layered clothing, rain-gear, etc.), as all 10,000 Trees plantings proceed “Rain or Shine”

  • Be able to bring and use tools such as pocket-knife (for cutting ropes securing tree bundles), clip-board (for holding site map), permanent marker (for marking tags), etc.

  • *If you don’t already have these abilities, then be willing and able to learn from 10,000 Trees’ training and/or 10,000 Trees’ Senior Planting Coaches 


Estimated (~) Time Commitment:

  • Sat, May 2nd, 2020: ~1 hour in the morning for the site walk-through, and hands-on training (if you want it), plus ~3 hours if you also want to help get the site ready

  • Sun, May 3rd, 2020: ~4 to ~8 hours on Sun, May 3rd, 2020, ideally start at 8:30 a.m. and stay as long as you want
